Appendicitis is an inflammation or swelling of the appendix. It is important to us to know early about the causes, symptoms, and treatments of appendicitis. The appendix is a small and thin pouch organ measuring only 5 to 10 cm long that connected to the colon. The appendix is found in the lower right portion of your abdomen. For a long time, the appendix has been regarded as an organ that does not serve any function. Removing it also will not harm the person. However, appendicitis has the potential to trigger serious complications. Appendicitis is a common disease that can affect anyone at any age.

The cause or exact reason of this disease is unknown, so the prevention is also unknown. However, most appendicitis is thought to occur as the result of blockage of the entrance to the appendix. Here are some of the potential risk factors that can cause this ailment to manifest.
  • Blockage Lead to Painfull. The blockages are such as from feces, enlarged lymph tissue on the appendix wall, intestinal parasites like pinworm, foreign objects, and tumors.
  • Appendicitis May Arise Because of an Infection. Some of the common infections that may lead to appendicitis include adenovirus, Shigella bacteria, mucormycosis and histoplasmosis fungal infections, salmonella, measles, and Bacteroides bacteria.

Appendicitis Symptoms

The main symptom of appendicitis is stomach pain. The abdominal pain that indicates this disease usually begins in the middle abdomen. Appendicitis is an acute condition that can manifest without warning. Suddenly, you experience particularly pain. A few hours later, the pain will move to the lower right abdomen where the appendix is located and continues to hurt. After the pain manifests, the other symptoms of this ailment arise. These can vary from person to person, depending on the severity or progression of the illness.
  • Mild fever
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Rebound tenderness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Bloated
  • Cannot dispose of gas

Appendicitis Treatments

The conventional treatment method that most physicians would immediately recommend is to undergo an appendectomy. Appendectomy is basically the surgical removal of appendicitis. This is usually advised to prevent the risk of rupture, which can cause further complications.

Types of Appendectomy

There are two main types of appendectomy which are both carried out under a general anesthetic.
  • Laparoscopy or keyhole surgery. This procedure is preferred because of its quicker recovery time usually 24 hours. It is also recommended for obese or elderly patients
  • Open surgery. This is done if the appendix has already ruptured or previously, you had an open abdominal surgery. This surgery usually requires a recovery period of one week or more

Other Natural Treatments for Appendicitis

There are some natural techniques that can help you deal with the pain that comes with appendicitis. Here are some natural remedies which may be useful especially if the infection is detected at an early stage.
  • Castor oil pack. It helps to relieve the blockage and reduce inflammation
  • Garlic. It can alleviate inflammation and pain due to anti-inflammation content
  • Ginger. Ginger can reduce inflammation and pain while alleviating vomiting and nausea
  • Fresh lemon. Lemon helps prevent indigestion and constipation, relieves pain and boosts your immunity
  • Basil. It helps bring down the fever that may come with appendicitis
  • Vegetable juice. A mixture of beets, cucumber, and carrot juice may be helpful for patients with appendicitis
